When we research old San Francisco sports teams some are easier than others to document. This isn't one of those. The story is pretty convoluted but we've tried to do are best to capture the essence of the Bombers.
The Bay Bombers officially began in the early 50s and played at the Cow Palace. Their fame as the best roller derby team in the world came from their top player, Joan Weston, who joined the team from LA in the early 60s. She is credited with making the sport something worth watching. The hit 70's movie, Kansas City Bomber, starring Raquel Welsh was based on Joan.
Roller Derby started in Chicago in the mid 30s and San Francisco had teams playing at Kezar and at the old Winterland skating rink in the 40s. Although the sport had both men's and women's teams it was the women most people watched it for. Many of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s can remember watching Roller Derby on Saturday afternoon TV.
